John Margolies: Roadside America

John Margolies: Roadside America Overview

The native genius of America's mid-era automobile culture

Before the advent of corporate communications and architectural uniformity, America's built environment was a free-form landscape of individual expression. Signs, artifacts, and even buildings ranged from playful to eccentric, from deliciously cartoonish to quasipsychedelic. Photographer John Margolies spent over three decades and drove more than 100,000 miles documenting these fascinating and endearingly artisanal examples of roadside advertising and fantasy structures, a fast-fading aspect of Americana.

This book brings together approximately 400 color photographs of Main Street signs, movie theaters, gas stations, fast food restaurants, motels, roadside attractions, miniature golf courses, dinosaurs, giant figures and animals, and fantasy coastal resorts. In an age when online shopping and mega-malls have reconfigured American consumerism, stripping away idiosyncracy in favor of a bland homogeneity, Margolies's elegiac 30-year survey reminds us of a more innocent unpredictable and colorful past.

Customer Reviews

I own and have read and re-read many of John Margolies' previous books on roadside art and architecture such as "Ticket to Paradise" (movie theaters); "Home Away from Home" (motels); "Pump and Circumstance" (gas stations). These books mix period images, advertising and ephemera with John's razor-sharp, color-saturated Kodachromes. The text on all of these is well researched but not clogged with academic jargon. Clearly, Margolies has a vast knowledge as well as appreciation of the graphic qualities of these once largely ignored (even reviled) manifestations of the spirit of American entrepreneurism.

So, of course, when Taschen announced "Roadside America" - a profile of Margolies and a collection of his stand-alone photographs - I pre-ordered with anticipation and some curiosity to see how they would look, raw against the page unframed by text. They are, I think, the purest evocation of this lost exuberance. Many interpretations of roadside phantasmagoria are sentimental nostalgia. Others have that whiff of satire that sometimes emanates from "art" photography. Margolies' images are iconic, never ironic.

There are photographers whose work is interesting only when accompanied by extensive explanation. There are photographers whose work is intriguing without print accompaniment. There are only a few, like Margolies, which work either way. Although he seems to have made a career of avoiding the attachment of "artist" to his name -- this book will make that hard to do. The physical book is an incredible package -- beautifully printed, beautifully designed. And it's an incredible bargain.

This handsome volume takes us on a trip through the country. His other books have tantalizing insight into old downtowns and commercial districts. Next up, I hope - John Margolies' Main Street. This one we will definitely pre-order too!

Patrick Demarchelier

Patrick Demarchelier Overview

This monograph is the definitive guide to the career of one of the most prodigious fashion photographers of our time. From his earliest work at Harper's Bazaar to his now mythic collaboration with Vogue, Patrick Demarchelier has single-handedly redefined the fashion photograph and the fashion industry along with it. His celebrity portraits have shaped the public personae of figures ranging from Princess Diana to Madonna. Demarchelier is everywhere at once, with a photographic sensibility that is as iconic, incisive and as varied as his subject matter.
Published to coincide with the exhibition Patrick Demarchelier: Images et Mode a Paris at the Petit Palais, Paris, and featuring more than 400 of Demarchelier's most telling photographs, this volume provides an invaluable fashion reference point, all the while charting the course of our own cultural obsession with celebrity and beauty. All proceeds go to the charity Police--Action Solidaire.
Born outside Paris in 1943, Patrick Demarchelier relocated to New York in 1975, where he began his editorial career with Harper's Bazaar and Hearst Publications. His photographs appear regularly on the covers and in the pages of publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, among many others. He was the 2007 recipient of the Eleanor Lambert Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He continues to live and work in New York.

Customer Reviews

Patrick Demarchelier is widely regarding as one of, if not the, world's leading fashion photographer of our times. Despite his early years in and around Paris, it was Demarchelier's move to New York that landed him squarely in the sites of publications like Glamour, Elle, Mademoiselle, as well as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar where he enjoyed decade long collaborative relationships.

Like his predecessors, Henri Cartier-Bresson (for whom Demarchelier once worked) and Richard Avedon, Demarchelier has brought the rich and famous to his striking world of black and white portraiture. While not his first book, this Steidl edition is certainly the most complete compendium of his impressive body of work.

During his career, Demarchelier has captured iconic images of both top celebrities and models (the true supermodels) and this 408 page volume shows the best of that work with models (Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss) and non-models (Princess Diana, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Warren Beatty and numerous others) from both his magazine shoots as well as those for a host of corporate ad clients as well. (LouisVuitton, Chanel, L'Oreal, Lancome, Calvin Klein, Versace, Armani, Prada and Gucci have all used him over the years.) Despite it's cover (and unlike other photographers who often rely on intricate poses and props to create their images - Newton, LaChapelle, Leibowitz, Seliger, etc.) Demarchelier's portraits are often disarmingly simple and direct, allowing the essence of the individual to come to the fore. The book itself is laid out in a dramatic and uncomplicated format - a single large (mostly) black and white image on most pages - complimenting the feeling of the photographer's work.

What is surprising, is that given Demarchelier's stature as well as the extent of his work, that there hasn't been a comprehensive, retrospective work like this until now (most of the photographs depicted here are from the 80's and 90's - well over a decade ago.) Regardless, `Patrick Demarchelier' serves as a well done, albeit overdue, collection of one of the top portrait photographers of our time, which means, it is about time, indeed.

Advanced amateur or professional photographers may get bored by this book, but newcomers to model photography, I do not know if I use the correct term, this book is excellent. Reading, understanding, and applying positively affect my photos right away.

I personally was having problem in getting the right pose for model, especially full body. I have never felt good with the composition. I guess it was because the shape of human body is different from normal photo frame.

The way Jeff describes things are is excellent. Not so much of hard chewed theory. Practical approach with a small but make sense backgrounds makes me focus into trying to apply his lessons right away.

Customer Reviews

Don't expect to be dazzled by amazing lighting techniques or fancy photoshop effects...and don't expect this to be any substitute for a business or marketing class. This book is much more than that...it's pure inspiration! I would read page after page and think to myself, "this is about me...how did he know?" There are so many roadblocks in the way of anyone trying to make a living while following a passion for photography, and this book not only addresses many of those roadblocks, but inspires you to find a way around them. It may not give you the solutions, but you're creative, right? It'll inspire you to "create" your own path to success rather than present a one-size-fits-all approach. After finishing this book, I actually felt like I'd made a new friend. I know that sounds sounds a little strange, but it was so conversational in nature that I actually feel like I got to know David duChemin. Its obvious that the ideas and philosophies in this book are well thought out, and the author's casual writing style is in no way a compromise on proper writing technique. The sentences and stories are constructed so well that it is naturally an easy read.

Customer Reviews

I wish this book had been around when I started down the "digital road" years ago. Its an easy read that should prompt you to ask what it is you really like to shoot and then consider how to organize the business side, marketing, etc.

In a photographic world filled with what sometimes seems like aimless shooters (shoot everything and shoot it a lot) Mr. Tuck's book asks us to examine our talents and drive in a more cogent manner. Perhaps just as importantly his voice of experience told me a lot about handling essentials such as model releases, property releases, contracts for paid jobs, tax planning and insurance. All things a lot of us overlook in our rush to shoot, shoot, shoot.

Consider this book a "What Color is My Parachute" for photographers with a lot of other solid advice thrown in for good measure.

Another consideration he covers at length is to carefully consider managing the rights to our images. Do we give clients originals or not for example? You may not agree with his outlook on it, but regardless of how you do it this should thought through. Do you have a business model that separates you from competitors? Another thing worth considering before you hang out a shingle.

More questions to consider. Should I go to a photo school? Become an apprentice to someone? Join professional associations?

Kirk Tuck obviously speaks with his experience and shares it in this book. After reading it I'm considering a lot more essential areas that could have caused me issues down the line, and that alone is worth the price many times over. His writing style is down to earth and spending a day combing his thoughts would be invaluable to both beginners and a lot of professionals as well. Good stuff.

Tulsa Overview

When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book Tulsa sparked immediate controversy across the nation. Its graphic depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse in the youth culture of Oklahoma were acclaimed by critics for stripping bare the myth that Middle America had been immune to the social convulsions that rocked America in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture progressively overwhelmed by self-destruction -- and are as moving and disturbing today as when they first appeared. Originally published in a limited paperback version and republished in 1983 as a limited hardcover edition commissioned by the author, rare-book dealers sell copies of this book for more than a thousand dollars. Now in both hardcover and paperback editions from Grove Press, this seminal work of photographic art and social history is once again available to the general public.

Customer Reviews

"Tulsa" was Larry Clark's first book of photography. It made him famous instantly. The stark black-and-white visual style proved to be highly influential, and has been cited as an inspiration by such directors as Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Gus Van Sant. But perhaps more importantly, "Tulsa" was perceived as an uncommonly honest work, because Clark actually lived the life that he depicted. He was accepted by the world of marginals and drug addicts, he knew all of the characters in the book personally. And furthermore, "Tulsa" clearly shows the consequences of the marginal lifestyle, such as accidental gunshot wounds and dead babies. All this gave Clark a lot of credibility.

The book is honest, in the sense that all the photographs truthfully depict what occurred, and Clark probably didn't need to set any of them up. But nonetheless, it is very highly and deliberately stylized. In fact, most of the dramatic effect comes from the stylization, and not the immediate content of the photographs.

Let's examine how Clark does this. Consider the opening paragraph:

"i was born in tulsa oklahoma in 1943. when i was sixteen i started shooting amphetamine. i shot with my friends everyday for three years and then left town but i've gone back through the years. once the needle goes in it never comes out. L.C."

The paragraph is brilliant in its dramatic conciseness. It provides all of the context one needs to understand the photographs. At the same time, it reveals almost nothing about Clark. But this very lack of information already creates a certain sense of mystery and tension. The last sentence evokes an air of inevitable tragedy, and Clark's self-effacing use of initials seems to downplay his personal role and suggest that the tragedy may be universal, not limited to specific names.

The only other text in the book consists of a handful of captions. Almost all of the photographs are untitled, so Clark's choice of words for the captions is painstakingly deliberate. One of the few titled photographs is the one on the cover of the book. The caption reads, "dead 1970". The opposite page is blank except for the one line, "death is more perfect than life".

If there is a more perfect evocation of gloomy youthful romanticism, I'd like to see it. Probably Billy Mann assumed that pose by himself, and Clark was merely there to photograph it. But in this book and with this caption, Mann becomes a kind of tragic hero. There is nothing natural about his pose. It obviously glamorizes him, along with the self-destructive quote on the opposite page. But the caption's merciless conciseness makes Mann's death seem inevitable, and it also suggests vulnerability and naivete on his part, as if he didn't know that his guns and posturing wouldn't be able to save him.

In fact, the best way to read "Tulsa" is not as a Naturalistic document, a social commentary, or an indictment of society, but as a classical tragedy. The opening makes it obvious that something terrible will happen, but the photographs purposefully start early, with the tragedy a long way away. The first two photographs show the two principal characters, David Roper and Billy Mann, whose names are given in the captions. Clark makes them look touchingly young. Roper is squatting down with his chin on his arm and looking directly at the camera. He looks serious and lost in thought. Mann has a worried look on his face. In different ways, they look earnest and vulnerable.

Another picture shows Roper hunting in the woods, looking up into a tree with what looks like boyish delight. The first scenes of drug use take place in a well-lit dining room with a white tablecloth and a picture of Jesus. The point is obvious -- Clark is trying to create a sense of innocence that will be lost by the end of the book. He doesn't show how the characters were introduced to drugs or how they obtain them. In some sense, drugs aren't really the cause of the characters' downfall. Like in classical tragedy, it's more like fate.

The rest of the book achieves its power through contrast with these early scenes. Towards the end, Roper is portrayed as a big, shaggy junkie with a cynical grin. If this part is shocking, it's because one can't help but compare this image with the thoughtful boy on the first page. The settings also get progressively seedier, with much heavier use of darkness and shadow, underscoring the book's sense of inexorability.

Then, of course, there's a picture showing a pregnant woman shooting speed, shortly followed by a picture of a dead baby in a coffin. These events are like a sign that redemption has become impossible. But the characters don't seem to really want it, anyway.

And, in the very end, there's a photograph of three naked teenagers preparing to shoot speed. They're much younger than the other characters in this part of the book, so there's a hint of that innocence shown in the very beginning. But the implication is that the same conclusion is equally inevitable, and in fact will arrive much faster this time around. And yet the photograph is undeniably sensual, creating a feeling of subtle regret.

Clark's later work doesn't read in the same way. His second book "Teenage Lust," for example, reprises many of the scenes from "Tulsa," but contains much more text and information, and ends with a very long stream-of-consciousness autobiographical narrative. In some sense this decreases the power of the images. "Teenage Lust" is still worth seeking out (as of this writing, it has not yet been reprinted in an affordable edition), but "Tulsa" has a fatalistic mystique that stands apart from anything else Clark has ever made.

The Oxford Picture Dictionary English/Korean: English-Korean Edition

The Oxford Picture Dictionary English/Korean: English-Korean Edition Overview

A comprehensive, flexible, and up-to-date vocabulary reference and teaching tool for English language learning. The Oxford Picture Dictionary and its components create a highly teachable programme that can be used as a complete, four-skills beginning course, or as a language development supplement and practical reference. NEW Grammar Activity Book

Customer Reviews

I teach English as a second language, and this is the dictionary that I urge my higher beginning students to get. It's a wonderful practical vocabulary builder. I have seen disappointed reviews from people trying to use these bilingual Oxford Picture Dictionaries to learn a foreign language (i.e., not English), and I don't think the OPD the best dictionary in that circumstance. Everything in the dictionary is geared toward American English and American society, and all the incidental material that Oxford University Press creates for the OPD (and there is a lot of it) is in English.

When used for the purpose for which it was designed -- learning English -- this is a fantastic asset.

Although this is a basic book, it covers several topics that advanced darkroom printers will find useful. For example it discusses making test strips by exposing for the HIGHLIGHTS. I've used the method and have adopted it. I'm also experimenting with split-filter exposures which it discusses very completely and it has been very helpful. Worth the money -- I've learned several new techniques.

Pussies & Cheeks (English, French and German Edition)

Pussies & Cheeks (English, French and German Edition) Overview

Happy days have indeed arrived for unabashed eroticists of the buttocks and avowed fans of the pussy. Here are rear views from the nape downward to the crack between the cheeks, sharp close-ups of beautiful bottoms, both large and small. These young girls stretch their firm round backsides toward the viewer and spread their thighs to put their gorgeous genitals into the most flattering light. A genuine pleasure for every connoisseur of well-shaped femininity!

Customer Reviews

This is the first time I bought a book of this genre. I mainly wanted it for a coffee table book that should spark conversation with guests. The majority of images are crisp and high in detail, but there are a few that are just blurry all together and not done by the focus. Each woman has two pictures, an overview and then a closeup.

The reason I give this book 4 stars though was just the costs. For the mid 40's price range, I would have hoped for either more pages or even a bigger book. The size of the pictures and the length of the book were underwhelming to me.
