Customer Reviews

" Adjust your aura and fasten your seatbelt for a marvelous journey into the unknown: Bigfoot to the Bermuda Triangle, Aliens to Yetis, dowsing to the Da Vinci Code, telepathy to crop circles, Exploring the Unexplained separates truth from rumor and fiction from fable. The book features fresh reports from worlds we are only beginning to explore, including new findings on twins and synchronicity, mind-and-body studies and scientists' attempts to quantify accounts on the power of prayer."
The book is divided into multiple `mysteries', all including various sub-topics on extreme paranormal activity, hoaxes, and myths. The sections are based on marvels in History, Nature, Space, Mind and Matter, Spirit, and the World Beyond. From the stories of Atlantis and the Amityville Horror, Stigmata and Demonic Possession, Roswell and Crop Circles, Stonehenge to Easter Island, the book clearly demonstrates truth behind speculation. After reading the book, I quickly scanned over my favorite sections to re-read the parts that I could not engorge enough of. Hearing about most of these stories in my life at sometime in my life, I was thrilled to find a book that covered so many of them. Written and published by the editors of Time magazine, this book is definitely legitimate.

"It is curious to note the old sea-margins
of human though. Each subsiding century reveals some
new mystery; we build where monsters used to hid themselves..."
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Section one covers the `Mysteries of the Past'. Beginning with Plato and his story of Atlantis, the book quickly escalates to legends of King Arthur, King Tut, the Oracle of Delphi, and Newgrange. Seeing the remarkable photos to go along with the stories inside allows the reader to become invoked with a mystical and magical realm of surrealism.
Section two is about the `Mysteries of Nature'. This section is all about the Loch Ness Monster, Dowsing, the Fate of Dinosaurs, Bigfoot, Feng Shui, and Auras. The book depicts the story of the hoaxes behind Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, but also fails to explain the Bermuda Triangle and Auras. `Mysteries of Nature' is by far the most interesting section in the book.

" I believe that the extraordinary should be pursued. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"
- Carl Sagan
Thoroughly covered in the `Mysteries of Space', Editor Kelly Kuaner unravels the famous story behind Area 51, and Roswell, New Mexico. Eight pages are dedicated to aliens, UFOs, and dozens of pictures of those infamous little green men. The section also explains mysteries on Mars: the Martian Face, water on Mars, and the Martian Canals.
The last three sections cover Mind and Matter, Sprits, and Ghostly Experiences. All three share similar interests with one another, and could all be combined into one category. Angels, Faith Leaning, Nostradamus, Seers and Psychics, Vampires and Zombies, Miracles and Saints are all very interesting topics found in the late part of the book.
To conclude, (and being a student in a Pseudo-Science course), I strongly recommend this book as a teaching companion for teachers, students, and those who have a heart for the unexplained. This book does an amazing job at drawing the unfinished line of many marvels, myths, and legends if one cannot determine definite answers alone. The reader learns when read cover-to-cover, enlightenment in many scientific areas.

Misery Obscura: The Photography Of Eerie Von (1981-2009) Overview

From the deepest depths of punk rock's 1970s primordial wastelands, through the stygian goth swamps of the 1980s, and on into the bloodstained arenas of 1990s heavy metal, Eerie Von witnessed it all. Beginning as the unofficial photographer for punk legends The Misfits and later taking charge of the bass guitar as a founding member of underground pioneers Samhain and metal gods Danzig, the evil eye of Eerie Von's camera captured the dark heart of rock's most vital and bleeding-edge period, a time when rock and roll was not only dangerous, but downright menacing. Eerie Von's lens has documented everything from The Misfits' humble beginnings in Lodi, New Jersey, to the heights of Danzig's stadium-rock glory alongside metal superstars Metallica. As well as an essential visual document of music history, Eerie's road stories of triumph and damnation bring to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen.

Customer Reviews

First I will address the superficial side: The book itself looks amazing! It is well put together for a hardcover and the gloss appearance of the picture of Eerie looks really good and the quality and artistic approach to the book is 5 star! The contents: when I ordered the book I really thought I was going to get pictures without much backstory which I was fine with - as a Misfits/Samhain/Danzig fan for over 20 years now. I was really surprised to see the photos in this book as Eerie too some great intimate photos of the band. Eerie gives some great perspective on the years leading up to the break up of the original Danzig line up which was nice to hear sine we really only hear Glenn's side. Eerie keep everything professional and never picks on Danzig even though he has taken shots at Eerie in the past. It was a great trip to see some of the early photos from when Doyle joined the Misfits and even from before. I am amazed at some of the little things Eerie kept over the years which are shown in this book. Overall I highly recommend this book to Fiends everywhere. It will leave you wanting a classic Danzig era reunion for sure. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up before you can't find it. This book is MEANT to be bought as a hardcover. Great job Eerie and thanks for the walk down memory lane!

In the Womb: Witness the Journey from Conception to Birth through Astonishing 3D Images Overview

Imagine being able to observe with astonishing clarity a child's delicate features as they evolve over the course of a pregnancy, or witness the complex behavior of new human life in utero. Now we can, thanks to the advent of innovative 3D and 4D imaging technologies that provide a powerful diagnostic tool for doctors and cast vivid light on our earliest development—and a profound new way for parents to bond with their babies on a deeper emotional level.

Combining more than 140 images of life-like models based on the latest science, computer-generated illustrations, and 3D ultrasound images with an uplifting, informative text, In the Womb is a week-by-week chronicle of the mysterious, magical progress from embryo to fetus to full-term infant.

Each spread features a central image and information about that particular stage as well as brief commentary explaining what we know and how we know it. For example, at 24 weeks we watch a fetus open and close her eyes, display facial expressions resembling a grimace and a frown, and stick out her tongue (no one has yet established exactly why). And during the last trimester, we learn, she experiences REM sleep and can hear loud noises through the fluids of her mother's body—a first hint of the world that awaits outside the womb.

Based on National Geographic's acclaimed television program, originally aired in 2005 and soon to be supplemented with two more 2-hour segments, In the Womb is the perfect gift for expectant parents and a fascinating perspective for anyone captivated by the miracle of life.

Customer Reviews

This book describes in detail what is happening to the mother's body and inside the womb with the baby. Focusing on all medical aspects that aren't visible to the naked eye. It was very thorough- tons of microscopic pics(yeah-real pics) and pics of the baby in all stages. Talks some about twins and some things that can go wrong, but it explains why. Has discriptions and pictures almost week by week. Easy to read, even though they have proper names from medical terminology. The national geographic in the womb movie is awesome too. I bought this book through Amazon, after falling in love with the information it provided when I checked it out from the library. I bought it new, something I don't particularly like to do(buying used is better for the environment, and a budget) but I figure I will pass this down the family line, and I wanted one in perfect shape- which all amazon books are in (at least the ones that are ordered directly through amazon.)

The Linked Photographers' Guide to Online Marketing and Social Media Overview

"The Linked Photographer's Guide to Online Marketing and Social Networking" is a complete resource for photographers looking to improve their business through social media. This book provides a step-by-step process for getting a photographer's business online, and acts as a reference guide for the variety of online marketing options on the web. This one-of-a-kind guide is the key to making social media work for the photographer to improve their business!

Customer Reviews

Over four hundred million people have accounts on Facebook. Thousands, if not millions, of tweets are sent each day. Personal web sites are common. With all this traffic flying over the Internet, it's easy to see why some photographers believe that there has to be a way to turn all these electronics signals into dollars by selling their images online. "The Linked Photographers' Guide to Online Marketing and Social Media" attempts to tell photographers how to do this.

After a brief introduction to social networking on the Internet, the authors discuss some fundamentals of social network marketing, including preparation of a plan, branding, creation of websites and blogs, search engine optimization and analytics, and the use of ads. The third part of the book describes most of the major social media sites and the authors' suggestions on how to use them. The book concludes with descriptions of how the authors and other photographers have used social networking for marketing.

My first impression of the book was that it seemed rather general and did not provide enough specifics on how to use particular social media sites. Then, when I went on line with the book in hand, I found that the authors had provided more information than I noticed at first. For example, while I was familiar with Google analytics, which allow you to examine the nature of the traffic to your website (presumably so that you can improve your marketing), I was unaware that Facebook also provided its own analytics until the book led me to them. On the other hand, you won't learn how to design a good website in this book.

Even though I recommend this book for those interested in online marketing, I do have some quibbles. For example in their discussion of web sites the authors ignore the capabilities of software like Photoshop and Lightroom to create web sites quickly. It is true that these websites follow templates that are not designed for marketing, but photographers willing to spend a little time learning to use software like Dreamweaver can quickly customize the web sites created to make marketing web sites.

In the chapter on blogs the authors tell us that photographers' blogs should be tailored to their audience, but then go on to describe blogs that discuss primarily photographic technique and activities. That makes sense for individuals trying to sell to photographers but not for those trying to market their photographs or services to the public.

One area that is ignored is the question of how effective online marketing actually is for most photographers. It seems to me that the biggest problem photographers trying to sell their work encounter is one of too much supply and too little demand. I realize that these economic questions are beyond the scope of this work, but photographers should be warned that even if you follow all of the advice in this book, there will still be more marketing to do.

For the photographer interested in marketing through social networking, this book will provide a good introduction. No one should expect that merely following the advice in this book will result in the sale of a single image.

Want to finally understand exposure? Interested in learning to "see" and composing your images more creatively? Ready to master the magic of light? It’s all here, the techniques every amateur photographer needs to take better nature, landscape, people, and close-up photos. You’ll even get creative techniques, like making "rain" and capturing "ghosts," and practical advice on gear, equipment, and postprocessing software. Filled with Bryan’s inspirational photographs, this is the one essential guide for every camera bag.

Customer Reviews

Having read several of Bryan's others books I was familiar with his style and was looking forward to another good read. As others have mentioned- if you have read Understanding Exposure (which I also highly recommend), you will find much of the same information (and even photos) throughout. This book does go beyond that though and even though I recognized much info from the UE book, I still found loads of helpful information. UE goes into more detail regarding aperture, shutter speed and ISO choices. This book gives you a moderate overview of these items and adds features about doing macro work, composition and other topics. This book will go in my permanent collection for me to refer to often. I also appreciate Bryan's writing style- I am being taught but not over my head and in a friendly language.

Bottom line, if you've read UE I'll give this 3.5 stars for the overlap. If you have not read UE I give it 5 stars.

Thoughts on Landscape: Collected Writings and Interviews

Thoughts on Landscape: Collected Writings and Interviews Overview

A lifetime's meditation on photography and the landscape.

Frank Gohlke has been a leading figure in American landscape photography for over thirty years. He has photographed grain silos in Minnesota, the aftermath of a tornado in Texas, the destruction and rebirth of the land after the Mount St. Helens eruption in Washington, and a river’s quiet course in Massachusetts. His is a career of deep, unbroken contemplation of the enduring landscape and of our place within it. And for nearly as long as Gohlke has been photographing the landscape, he has been writing about it.

In the spirit of Henri Cartier-Bresson's seminal book, "The Mind’s Eye", and Robert Adams's "Beauty in Photography", Gohlke’s writings on photography span from the philosophical to the personal. In interviews, essays, artist statements, and lectures, Gohlke focuses both on his own work and life, and on the works and lives of the photographers around him. Woven throughout is his affection for and loyalty to the landscape around him, and his uncanny ability to convey the richness of his experience to readers--in words just as in images.

Learning from Las Vegas - Revised Edition: The Forgotten Symbolism of Architectural Form

Learning from Las Vegas - Revised Edition: The Forgotten Symbolism of Architectural Form Overview

"Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice...." -- Ada Louise Huxtable, The New York TImes

Learning from Las Vegas created a healthy controversy on its appearance in 1972, calling for architects to be more receptive to the tastes and values of "common" people and less immodest in their erections of "heroic," self-aggrandizing monuments.

This revision includes the full texts of Part I of the original, on the Las Vegas strip, and Part II, "Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed," a generalization from the findings of the first part on symbolism in architecture and the iconography of urban sprawl. (The final part of the first edition, on the architectureal work of the firm Venturi and Rauch, is not included in the revision.) The new paperback edition has a smaller format, fewer pictures, and a considerably lower price than the original. There are an added preface by Scott Brown and a bibliography of writings by the members of Venturi and Rauch and about the firm's work.

Customer Reviews

Robert Venturi's study of the Las Vegas signage phenomena and it's impact on "architecture" is brilliant in it's scope. While written almost twenty five years ago, this book gains more and more pertinence as we as a society progress further into a "reality" of symbols, reproductions and representations. These words and thoughts are basically essential to the understanding of any city anymore, not just Las Vegas. Where this book misses the mark though is in the execution, as shown in Venturi's work, of these ideas. The projects put forth seem to pale in comparison to the implications the text actually has. These notions of architecture are by far some of the most relevant and important in modern theory today, it is unfortunate that their full potential could not be realized in these projects.... but maybe that is for you and I to do.

Life: 100 Events That Shook Our World : A History in Pictures from the Last 100 Years

Life: 100 Events That Shook Our World : A History in Pictures from the Last 100 Years Overview

There has never been another period of time to compare with the last 100 years. From the Auto Age to the Computer Age, from Lucky Lindy to a man walking on the moon, our world has been an endless wellspring of unparalleled drama. Using their trademark brilliant photography and informative writing, the editors of Life have assembled a fascinating, engrossing volume that captures the happenings and the characters who have fleshed out this saga, names that will live through the ages: FDR and JFK, the Babe and Elvis, Einstein and Martin Luther King. And, of course, the likes of Hitler and bin laden. This is a volume certain to entertain today and for generations to come.

Customer Reviews

"100 Events" might better be titled, "100 20th century mostly-American events that LIFE has pictures of." Nothing wrong with that of course, but it would make for a more accurate title.

The book unfolds in classic LIFE format, with full page and double-page layouts of famous events. Some are truly momentous and have potential world-wide historical impact. The discovery of the structure of DNA will affect the way human beings heal, diagnose and even propagate. Dr. Christian Barnard's first heart transplant in 1967 also changed the way we see the human body - less as a unity than as an array of interchangeable parts. The dropping of the atomic bomb dramatically changed the nature of warfare and the way that all nations must learn to relate. And the walk on the moon in 1969 was a technical achievement that truly did astound the world and perhaps even paved the way for an end to the Cold War.

But Marilyn Monroe modeling a bikini? The Yankees acquiring Babe Ruth? Louis Armstrong? Madonna? The U2 Incident? Even the 1969 Woodstock music festival is a questionable choice.

Whatever.

The pictures are fun to look at. The events may spur debate. Which 100 would you choose? LIFE could have done worse.

Customer Reviews

For successful photographers and retouchers, this is the one true source. It will take you a while to get through it. You may want to go through it more than once. But once you are done with it, you can work in any market.

What's bad?

There are only three minor quibbles from my point of view:

1. The photos (which also come on a CD for you to do the exercises) are slightly horrible. But they are perfectly tailored to teach you what you have to learn. So don't let the photography turn you off from the book. The pictures may not be works of art, but they do the job.

2. The pictures don't line up with the text. He'll be talking about an image that appears like 2 pages earlier or later. It'd be nice if the pictures were on the same page as when he's talking about them.

3. It's dense. He could make an entire book out of basically each chapter. If you are a beginner, stay away. If you are not serious about color, stay away. If you want to be spoon-fed, stay away. But if you want to be good, this is the starting point and the finish line.

What's good?
He doesn't just tell you what to do; he gets you thinking critically about why you are doing it. He prepares you to work in the real world. Good color doesn't have to be an accident. Every retoucher I know will tell you this is THE source.

It's not for everyone. If you aren't good at learning from a book you probably won't get through this. If you are not already proficient in Photoshop, you may want to come back to this book later. Be prepared to spend some time on this book, (I think it probably took me like 2 months to get through it the first time.) You don't just read it; you have to do each exercise to get the full benefit. But if you want to be world-class good at color, this is the only place to go.
