CREATURES THAT TIME FORGOT PB (Pack and a Poster Series)

CREATURES THAT TIME FORGOT PB (Pack and a Poster Series) Overview

The growth of the disabilities movement, campaigning for "rights not charity" has led to a need to re-examine the representation of disabled people. As a disabled photographer and writer, David Hevey has been a pioneer in changing visual representations of disabled people. He advocates a move away from medical, charity or impairment fixation into a visual equivalent of "rights not charity". David Hevey's work forms the basis of this book; in this sense, "The Creatures Time Forgot" is a political autobiography. The book presents David Hevey's work within the wider context of disability and photographic representation, from Charities Advertising to Disabled-led Alternative Imagery and the use and construction of disabilities photography within the Left and the Social Services. Hevey examines what has gone wrong with the representation of disabled people, and why they are neither present as human nor empowered as people in these forms. Hevey's examination of disabled people within photography explores the metaphorical role of the disabled person within American photography and the documentary work of such people as Gary Winogrand and Walker Evans. This book should be of interest to undergraduates studying photography, social policy, cultural studies and social work.

Would really like to see this novella expanded. The concept was interesting, and the end provided hope and terror. A relatively quick read with solid action and some touching moments.

Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu

Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780752226644
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu Overview

"They're Not Pets, Susan," says a stern father who has just shot a bumblebee, its wings sparkling in the evening sunlight. A lone office worker, less than an inch high, looks out over the river in his lunch break, "Dreaming of Packing it All In." A tiny man makes his way back to a tiny car, with a tiny shopping bag: "Shopping for one again." Another office worker sits atop a gigantic engagement ring and gazes into the distance; the caption reads, simply: "No." These are the collected photographs of Slinkachu, a London-based artist who for several years has been placing tiny hand painted people on street corners, park benches, and the Underground, and leaving them to fend for themselves. Much like Banksy’s early graffiti work, Slinkachu’s creations mix the bustle, humor, and melancholy of city life, and lie quietly in the darker corners of London’s streets, waiting to be discovered. And if you’re lucky enough to find one, to quote The Times: "Oddly enough, even when you know they are just hand-painted figurines, you can’t help but feel that their plights convey something of our own fears about being lost and vulnerable in a big, bad city." This volume also includes a forward from acclaimed novelist Will Self.

Customer Reviews

The review for this book is the same as my review for Walter Martin & Paloma Munoz: Travelers, found them together, love them both equally!

I saw this book at the SFMOMA bookstore, along with Little "People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu." I do feel a tad guilty about turning to amazon.com to purchase these books and not supporting the MOMA directly; I'm also curious if this effects the percentage the authors receive? That aside, I give top marks to amazon for offering these books as a pair, eerily intuitive folks! The books themselves are of excellent quality, the photos are beautiful. I shared these books with a number of people who all got a hearty laugh out of this style of miniature art. They arrived in good order as promised, thanks amazon!

I am a semi-pro photographer and am always on the lookout for inspiration, so when i saw this on the shelf, I had to pick it up. 10 or 15 pages in, I was hooked. I had to buy it.

The images in this book are incredible, but the foreward the and way the images are arranged just makes reading through that much more fun.

The book is for everyone really, with celebrities photos starting around 1913. It is really an ode to our time in pictures.

I would recommend this book to everyone and am happy I purchased it.

Workers: Archaeology of the Industrial Age

Workers: Archaeology of the Industrial Age Overview

More than those of any living photographer, Sebastiao Salgado's images of the world's poor stand as icons of the human condition. His transforming photographs bestow dignity on the most isolated and neglected, from refugees in the famine-stricken Sahel, to the men who swarm the gold mines of Brazil. Now Saigado goes beyond icons to bring us a photographic revolution of such epic scope that it transcends mere image making. These photographs form an archaeological perspective of the activities that have defined labour from the Iron Age through the Industrial Revolution to the present. This book is the vision of a man with a moral mission: he honours workers of the world with the empathy and drama only he can bring to a photograph, paying homage to those who do manual labour in our increasingly technological society.

Customer Reviews

Salgado is divine. He produces the most perfect images out there, in the documentary realm, and this book projects that well.
The images are spectacular, no other word than that.
Excellent printing of an amazing darkroom work.

Still, one series stands out above all - the Brazilian gold mine workers.
This is the only series where you can feel strong emotions and the judgmental eye of the photographer (and this is what I'm actually looking for in documentary photography. But it might be only me, though).
I assume the reason for that is Salgado's origin, but nevertheless, I really wanted all the series in the book to be emotional as this one.

Customer Reviews

I bought this book about a week after I got my camera since the manual is just that...a manual. If you're just looking to use the automatic modes on the camera, save your money. If you want to really use your camera, this is an excellent guide. There are good explanations and good illustrations in a logical format that is easy to read and understand. I've used this as a hands-on guide, practicing as I read through it and it has definitely made me comfortable with the camera and is giving me a good foundation in the basics of digital photography. Highly recommend.

Customer Reviews

I've been using graphic software since the early 90s and have run through the various bibles, dummy guides, missing manuals, HOT videos, etc. One thing I've noticed is that any book or course by Deke McClelland will be clearly written and easy to understand, and organized in such a way as to establish a good working method within the program itself.

This book did not disappoint. If you've used Photoshop for a while, it isn't hard to skim through stuff you already know, and it's very easy to learn the new tricks. The images and steps are large and clear, the index in this book perfectly adequate and better than most. If you're a beginner, you couldn't really ask for a better introduction to the program, and intermediate users will learn what they need quickly and easily.

Classic Essays on Photography

Classic Essays on Photography Feature

Classic Essays on Photography Overview

Containing 30 essays that embody the history of photography, this collection includes contributions from Niepce, Daguerre, Fox, Talbot, Poe, Emerson, Hine, Stieglitz, and Weston, among others.

Customer Reviews

Although Trachtenberg's collection has been around for awhile (since 1980), it provides a very nice selection of primary source materials on the history of photography. If you want to know what people were actually thinking and saying about photography during its first 140 years or so, you can find it here. In addition, Trachtenberg's introductions to the selections are quite good--not showy or promoting some particular intellectual hobby horse, but solid and factual and useful to students--I've been studying the topic for years and have found very few factual errors or questionable judgments in his material. The main limitation is that the book stops in the 1970s, so, for my course in history of photography I have to provide additional materials for the recent developments, such as digital photography and the relations between photography and computing and the internet. The only other common item somewhat like this is Goldberg's "Photography in Print," which costs twice as much and, although it is more complete, is not twice as good, at least for the purposes of students in a first course in history of photography. My students can pick up a copy of Trachtenberg for a few dollars used, not much more new, and they've responded well to the selection of readings. Some minor downsides: there is no index, and the individual readings don't give the date of publication (though this is generally available in the "Sources" section at the end of the book). In short, within its limitations, this is an excellent source book, and a bargain in an age of obscene textbook pricing.

Customer Reviews

This is a God -sent handbook for anyone who has used SLR cameras with old-fashion films, and who now is moving over to digital SLR. Right, this particular book is for the Canon 400D, which is not the newest on the shelves, but I bought my 400D second hand and was determent to get the maximum out of my purchase.

The book gives very good, and easy to follow step-by-step guidance on how to master the different techniques required securing the best results while photographing out in the nature, taking close-ups, sports and more.

Even if you are quite new to photographing, this book will be a great help, as it is written in plain English, and does not use technical terms that so often leaves the beginner feeling stupid.

I strongly recommend this book.

Andrew Moore: Detroit Disassembled

Andrew Moore: Detroit Disassembled Overview

No longer the Motor City of boom-time industry, the city of Detroit has fallen into an incredible state of dilapidation since the decline of the American auto industry after the Second World War. Today, whole sections of the city resemble a war zone, its once-spectacular architectural grandeur reduced to vacant ruins. In Detroit Disassembled, photographer Andrew Moore records a territory in which the ordinary flow of time-or the forward march of the assembly line-appears to have been thrown spectacularly into reverse. For Moore, who throughout his career has been drawn to all that contradicts or seems to threaten America's postwar self-image (his previous projects include portraits of Cuba and Soviet Russia), Detroit's decline affirms the carnivorousness of our earth, as it seeps into and overruns the buildings of a city that once epitomized humankind's supposed supremacy. In Detroit Disassembled, Moore locates both dignity and tragedy in the city's decline, among postapocalyptic landscapes of windowless grand hotels, vast barren factory floors, collapsing churches, offices carpeted in velvety moss and entire blocks reclaimed by prairie grass. Beyond their jawdropping content, Moore's photographs inevitably raise the uneasy question of the long-term future of a country in which such extreme degradation can exist unchecked.

The book came in excellent condition and before the expected delivery date. It is an excellent book that anyone interested in Detroit should have.

The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos

The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780240809342
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos Overview

Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs.
Digital photography has brought a new, exciting aspect to design - first because the instant feedback from a digital camera allows immediate appraisal and improvement; and second because image-editing tools make it possible to alter and enhance the design after the shutter has been pressed. This has had a profound effect on the way digital photographers take pictures.
The Photographer's Eye shows how anyone can develop the ability to see and shoot great digital photographs. The book explores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially, it also addresses the new digital technique of shooting in the knowledge that a picture will later be edited, manipulated, or montaged to result in a final image that may be very different from the one seen in the viewfinder.

Features
*Covers both traditional in-camera composition and the new opportunities for picture-making made possible by digital imaging editing
*Shows how to explore situations and locations in order to find the best possible photographic possibilities
*Uses clear examples from real photographic assignments, with schematic illustrations of how and why the pictures work

Customer Reviews
