Playboy: Redheads Overview

From Playboy's classic archives comes a trilogy of stocking-stuffer-sized volumes, each devoted to a certain hair color destined to quicken a man's pulse. Blonde? Brunette? Redhead? In the fifties, sixties, and seventies, it seemed like all the Playboy models, not just blondes, had more fun. Building sandcastles in the buff, romping on tiger skin rugs, or starting pillow fights, beauties of every tress are captured in these timeless color photographs. Playboy contributing editor James R. Petersen introduces each book with a heartfelt text, and witty quotes are sprinkled throughout. At once evocative and whimsical, this handsome collection is a perfect gift for a gentleman—whether he prefers a blonde, marries a brunette, or has always had a thing for a redhead.

Customer Reviews

This book, although small in size, is packed full of stunning beauties. It is fairly dated but the girls are all stunning and all but a few are natural redheads. An up to date version of this book would really put the icing on the cake, but whilst we wait for that, this book will certainly fuel a passion.

The dvd to go with this series is an absolute must for any 'redophiles'. Both are recommended highly.

Customer Reviews

This book is one I purchased with Monte Zucker's book. I like them both. I find this one has a lot more information in it, but some aspects of the book are not done well. For value, this book beats Monte's book because it has so much information. For quality of presentation, editing and imagery, Monte's book makes this one turn red.

The cover photo, as someone else said, is rather obviously back focused... he focused on her ear, apparently, and the highlights are blown out. On top of that, it's not a portrait so much as it's a model portfolio pic. What's the difference? A portrait is showing you the person, and giving you some idea pf who they are. The portfolio pic is giving you an idea of how pretty they can be made up, but not showing you WHO they are. The difference is emotion versus looks, and this image is not a portrait by this (my) definition. It doesn't speak well of a book, in my opinion, when the cover image isn't properly focused, exposed or defined.

But it doesn't end there. Oddly enough, I can't find very many images at all in the book that were done by the author except for illustrative purposes... for instance, showing you what a highlight looks like when you're photographing a reflective surface using diffuser A, B or C. Huh? Why are the images from everyone else?

The text of the book is good. Meaty and informative. The book is definitely worth having for that, but several things about the book leave you wondering if it wasn't just rushed out the door without really paying much attention and doing it right.

So I have given this book 4 stars, because the information is good and well worthwhile, but the book as a whole isn't quite up to the level of polish and professionalism I would expect.

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

The Rose That Grew From Concrete Feature

The Rose That Grew From Concrete Overview

His talent was unbounded, a raw force that commanded attention and respect.

His death was tragic -- a violent homage to the power of his voice.

His legacy is indomitable -- remaining vibrant and alive.

Here now, newly discovered, are Tupac's most honest and intimate thoughts conveyed through the pure art of poetry -- a mirror into his enigmatic life and its many contradictions.

Written in his own hand at the age of nineteen, they embrace his spirit, his energy...and his ultimate message of hope.

Customer Reviews

I was already a massive 2Pac fan, but after reading this book I found greater appreciation for this late genius. Tupac Amaru Shakur is a well known musical artist, but a seldom appreciated human being. This collection of poems brings to light his genius and in my opinion sets him among the greatest thinkers of all time. It is unfortunate that he was not and is still not listened to and appreciated. His work is not massively influential because many people dismiss his work on face value. He never sought the media's approval and has remained a true gem for true thinkers around the world. Sit back with your favorite 2Pac tracks playing and read these poems, it will prove to be a great experience.

Naked City

Naked City Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780306812040
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Naked City Overview

The ultimate collection of Weegee's shocking tabloid photographs, from the ultimate tabloid city.

For Naked City, his first collection, Weegee cruised the streets of 1940s New York in the wee hours in search of the sensational. Lewd, louche, licentious but always brimming with life (except when brimming with death), Weegee's photographs have endured decades of modern art criticism and are again enjoying a much-deserved cult revival.

Naked City Specifications

"If it bleeds, it leads" -- the cynical battle cry of today's tabloids -- might easily have been the motto of Arthur Fellig, the freelance photojournalist better known as Weegee, who cruised the streets of 1940s New York in the wee hours of the morning in search of the sensational. His pictures of children sleeping on fire escapes, blood-splattered corpses on sidewalks and amorous couples on the beach -- as seen in this reprint of his first book -- reveal that Weegee, unlike his latter day counterparts, had heart and soul. He also had a cockeyed sense of humor, as evidenced by his captions and camera tips.

Customer Reviews

This is a small-format (non-coffee-table) book containing a representative selection of Weegees typical photos of New York tragedies (mostly) of the 20s, 30s and 40s, together with his own cryptic comments. Not to everyone's taste, but an iconic social document of the place and times.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes Overview

Photographic artists and students of alternative process photography will welcome this new edition of Christopher James' The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. This significantly expanded edition is a full-color, lavishly illustrated, comprehensive resource that explores every aspect of alternative process image making. With his highly conversational writing style, Christopher James explores the techniques, processes, idiosyncrasies, history, and cultural connections that are such a significant part of the genre. Best of all, Christopher makes it extremely accessible, providing clear instructions and practical workflow advice. The book delves into a vast menu of alternative and traditional options, among them: calotype, salted paper, cyanotype, argyrotype, chrysotype, POP, kallitype, ambrotype/wet collodion, Van Dyke, platinum/palladium, Ziatype, gelatin dry plate emulsions, carbon, gum bichromate, albumen, hand-applied emulsions, paper, alternative imaging systems, and digital negative production for alternative process image making. The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes has become the unanimous standard reference text for alternative process photography, one that students love to read and work from. Not only does this definitive work make the most complex ideas easy to understand, it is conversational, comfortable, inspirational, and fun to read- a tremendous resource and a treasure trove of alternative process images.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes Specifications

Pssst, wanna make a weird photograph? How about a moody blue cyanotype or a Kallitype? Or maybe a ziatype, anthotype, or Ambrotype? Or perhaps you'd just like to know more about image transfer processes or how to make a pinhole camera. Imagine knowing a really cool guy who casually tells you lots of valuable stuff about the history and science of photography while you're working in his experimental darkroom, and you've got the essence of the unusual and delightful Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. Christopher James, a photographer and former Harvard University professor, leads you carefully through the chemistry and use of materials for each process. He offers numerous ways to make negatives and prepare the printing paper, and he coaches you in understanding and accepting the enormously variable effects of each method. Seven useful appendices deal with such topics as safety considerations and resources on the Web. Unlike the narrowly task-oriented approach of average how-to guide, this one points you to a much bigger world. Even the illustrations include a generous assortment of contemporary prints--among them James's own inventive images--as well as work by 19th- and early-20th-century photographers. They were the ones who pioneered most of the techniques that are now considered "alternative."

The fun of this book--even for someone unlikely ever to set foot in a darkroom--lies in the author's fascinating excursions into the wide world of knowledge, from the workings of 3-D to Charles Babbage's steam-driven punch-card systems. Equally compelling are the author's sense of humor and his utter lack of dogmatism. "In gum printing," he writes, "there are very few absolutely correct ways to do anything." --Cathy Curtis

Customer Reviews

Christopher James was my teacher, guide, and mentor in the early 90s. As students we used an earlier version of this text, photocopied and bound in plastic binders. In retrospect, I can't believe how lucky I was to be in his classroom. The first and second editions of this text read beautifully - you really feel as though you are in the classroom with Christopher while reading his voice. I just used his chapter on cyanotypes as a refresher before working on a body of work and was so happy to see new information about creating digital negatives. Put this book on your shelf because there is so much invaluable information between the covers, because it's loaded with inspirational artwork, and because reading it is such a friendly experience. -- xtine burrough, co-author, Digital Foundations: Intro to Media Design with the Adobe Creative Suite (AIGA Design Press), [...]

Video Shooter, Second Edition: Storytelling with HD Cameras

Video Shooter, Second Edition: Storytelling with HD Cameras Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780240810881
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Video Shooter, Second Edition: Storytelling with HD Cameras Overview

Tired of the dry rudimentary guidebooks that ignore the art of telling compelling video stories? Video Shooter takes you to a new level of competence and expertise by presenting the camera as a potent storytelling tool. Sure, you will learn the basics of HD formats, the fundamentals of compression and color space, but only so much as these technical areas serve your craft, which includes more fundamentally camera placement and eyeline, choice of lens focal length and the power of the triangle in creating powerful compositions. Throughout the book you will come to understand the master shooter's guiding principle, that story is the conduit through which all creative and technical decisions flow.

Humorous and opinionated, the author provides insightful anecdotes and tutorials that help you learn the video shooter's craft. While the book focuses primarily on how to get the most out of your entry- and mid-level P2, XDCAM, and AVCHD camcorder, the principles and lessons covered such as shooting for green screen and understanding point of view apply just as well to video shooters and storytellers of any level.

As apprenticeships in the industry have largely disappeared, aspiring shooters and film students have had to seek alternative sources for training and guidance. In Video Shooter, you will find a master teacher offering perceptive lessons with a healthy dose of inspiration; these pages are as close to a living and breathing mentor as one can get in a printed form.

Hundreds of full-color photos and illustrations present the many lessons throughout the book.

* Engaging and informative, veteran shooter Barry Braverman shares the ins and outs of crafting a story using DV cams.
* Extensively illustrated in full color, readers will see examples of good video shooting that will help them learn what to do (and what to avoid) in their own videos.
* Companion website offers tutorials, bonus illustrations, examples, demos, equipment reviews, craft tips, blogs, and an instructor's corner complete with students' work.

Customer Reviews

First, you really get to know how he feels about the new crop of amateur (and even pro) moviemakers - he laments the lack of classical skills and the impact of cheap video cameras on the talent pool and on the market. He then proceeds to teach us, the amateur, the elements of his craft which will hopefully turn us into better storytellers.

You'll learn about such basics as framing and composition, what to exclude, the trap of "keeping the tape running", lighting, how to shoot flattering shots of your subjects, and pretty much all you should consider to create the best video possible. Along the way you'll get to know him, his career, and his views on some topics. It's eye-opening to see him "confess" how some shots in documentaries are staged to give false impressions, such as making a languid stock trading company appear busy and frantic. This is a warning to those who depend on TV - even "educational" TV - for their view of the world! (Also google "fauxtography" for more.) There is also a lot of information about the history of filmmaking and the tools used. You'll read about the basics of creating a movie and see a scene from "Citizen Kane" dissected to reveal the thought behind the shots. Fascinating stuff.

His main focus, though, is on storytelling, and all this advice is the means to this end.

The pages are full of photos used to illustrate the various points. Although I found the color a bit saturated and the fonts used for captioning a bit yucky, the photos are a great way to skim the material to see what the page is about. This is good because some of us might find the book a bit wordy.

Anyone who wants to become a better videographer could use this book.

Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Voices That Matter)

Vision & Voice: Refining Your Vision in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Voices That Matter) Overview

David duChemin, author of the bestselling Within the Frame, believes there are three images that go into making a photographer's final image: the one she envisions, the one she shoots, and the one she develops. Vision and Voice is about this third and last component, as the photographer brings the image into the Develop module of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom--today's most popular digital darkroom.

Most often, the most powerful images strongly communicate just one message, theme, or emotion. This book teaches readers how to take that theme or emotion they had when they first shot the image, and carry it through to the development process in Lightroom. After discussing this crucial process of bringing the photographer's intention and vision to Lightroom, duChemin first gives the readers a quick look at Lightroom's Develop module, explaining the features and settings--not only in how they work but in what aesthetic effects they have on an image. duChemin then reveals his personal process for developing images in Lightroom, as he works through 20 images, beginning with the RAW digital negative and finishing with the final, developed image ready to share.

This book is not an exhaustive overview or tour of Lightroom. Instead, duChemin takes a unique approach by concentrating solely on the Develop module, the component of Lightroom where a photographer has the most powerful tools to bring their vision and voice to the image.

The Cannabible 3 (v. 3) Overview

When Jason King blew our minds with the first two CANNABIBLE books, we never imagined that the best was still to come. In CANNABIBLE 3, he's back with a whole new crop of marijuana strains, accompanied by informative and entertaining notes on their flavors, aromas, and effects. King heralds the latest achievements in overseas breeding, recommends the best bud for winding down after a stressful day, and discovers a nug that tastes uncannily like tropical Lifesavers candy. Packed with enough mouth-watering photos to induce a contact high, CANNABIBLE 3 is the perfect gift for pot aficionados and a must-have for fans of the first two volumes.

Customer Reviews

This book is amazing, best of the three(i own them all). Better layout and pictures. Some more easy to find strains then the other versions. I'll say on thing, if you like cannabis at all you will love this book. HOWEVER, there is something in this book that really upset me. There is a large tone of vegan elitism in this book. The intro is a 12 page essay on the evils of modern society in every way including bashing many things used to create and sell his book. I felt it was insulting and over the top in every way.

But dont let that stop you from a other wise great book.

Customer Reviews

I've been reading this book for the past couple of weeks and am very nearly finished. It presents a lot of helpful tips and tricks laid out in an easy-to-follow format, and the writing is straightforward but not dry - I have found it to be quite entertaining reading for being a how-to manual, and it has re-energized my enthusiasm for photo restoration. I think it will be a much-used go-to book on my desk.

However, if you are new to Photoshop (like me: I've been using Jasc/Corel's programs forever, and have always found Adobe products off-puttingly daunting and clunky, but am now biting the bullet) or just getting used to CS4, there will be a little bit of frustration due to figuring out where some of the controls are. Often, Ctein tells how to do something, but not where to find the tools to do it. This isn't bad since it makes you have to figure it out (which is better than being spoon-fed), but it's something to be aware of if you're not wholly familiar with PS.

That is a minor downside, though, since most of the information presented would easily translate to other photo-editing programs.

Leroy Grannis: Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s

Leroy Grannis: Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s Overview

Capturing the perfect wave

"The book has the effect of a time capsule, bringing back an era that continues to resonate for us in shades of Technicolor and black and white." - Los Angeles Times Book Review, Los Angeles

At a time when surfing is more popular than ever, it's fitting to look back at the years that brought the sport into the mainstream. Developed by Hawaiian islanders over five centuries ago, surfing began to peak on the mainland in the 1950s, taking America--and the world--by storm. Surfing became not just a sport, but a way of life, and the culture that surrounded it was admired and exported across the globe. One of the key image-makers from that period is LeRoy Grannis, a surfer since 1931, who began photographing the scene in California and Hawaii in the longboard Gidget era of the early 1960s.

Customer Reviews

This is one of the few coffee table books that can give you a rush of adrenalin just by flipping the page.

Leroy Grannis may not have been the sole architect of the late twentieth century surfing culture phenomenon, but he certainly was among the dozen or so people that projected the image of surfing beyond the enthusiasts to almost every nook and cranny of our globe. Kids in Omaha bought surfing-styled duds, listened to surfing music, and went to some really hideous Hollywood surfing movies. Grannis, and the publications that used his photography, took surfing away the beach and showed the landlocked how much fun they were missing.

Whether you lived the lifestyle, emulated the lifestyle, or just want to know how cultural trends can capture the imagination, this is a great book.

The Devil's Candy: The Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood

The Devil's Candy: The Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood Overview

Veteran film critic for The Wall Street Journal Julie Salamon presents a juicy inside look at the making of the Hollywood mega-flop Bonfire of the Vanities. Salamon reveals how success, fame, and enormous amounts of money can be catastrophically mismanaged for the sake of ego.

Customer Reviews

The Devil's Candy is the story of the making of The Bonfire of the Vanities. It is the best (and possible only) book in recent times to describe how a movie is made, in depth, from inception to casting to production to editing to screenings and focus groups through release and box office.

The subtitle, "The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco" is misleading. This is not a book that analyses why a movie production went wrong. It is a journalistic look at how a movie is made, any movie, and this book uses the example of the Bonfire of the Vanities because that happened to be the production Julie Salamon was invited to observe from beginning to end. Tellingly, the original version of the book was subtitled instead "Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood" and the new subtitle was obviously added for the paperback version to try to pump up sales.

Most of the other reviews have said this book is for industry insiders, but it isn't. For insiders, there is nothing new here. This book is for people on the outside who want to know how the movie industry works. And what we learn is that for all the glamour, movie production is mostly meetings and sitting around sets doing endless takes of scenes that eventually get cut.

Assuming you're interested in learning how Hollywood works, from the endless scouting of locations to who is responsible for carrying the director's thermos of coffee, you will be educated. This book, at more than 400 pages, goes into gory detail, from just about everyone's point of view, from the director to costume manager. It's written as you would expect from a journalist on the banking desk at the Wall Street Journal (before she became the movie critic) - straightforward, inclusive, and accurate, not the breathless style with plenty of italics and exclamation points characteristic of showbiz books. But it is also the weakness of the book. There is too much detail that isn't important, too much describing the color of every carpet in every room visited, what kind of shoes everyone wears, and who is holding De Palma's coffee thermos at at every moment, too many people's points of view to keep the narrative flowing.

Overall, if you're looking for a juicy, fast flowing story about Hollywood disaster, you will be entirely disappointed. However, if you want a textbook on how a movie gets made, want to learn how Hollywood really works, this is *the* book.
