People Remembering Whitney Houston: A Tribute

People Remembering Whitney Houston: A Tribute Overview

Her's was a skyrocket of a life, a tale of beauty, soaring talent, and the risks of stardom.

Whitney Houston was born to sing: Her mom, Cissy Houston, is a noted gospel singer; Dionne Warwick was her cousin, soul great Aretha Franklin her aunt. And she was beautiful: Before she ever had a big radio hit, a teenage Whitney was booking modeling gigs in major magazines. Legendary talent guru Clive Davis heard her sing in a club and signed her at 19; her first album, Whitney Houston, spawned three No. 1 hits and made her a staple on MTV. Seven years later, The Bodyguard made her a movie star.

But at the height of an almost-unprecedented arc, something went wrong. Marriage to singer Bobby Brown coincided with a slip from the pinnacle; soon Houston was missing shows, behaving erratically and, eventually, admitting to drug problems. A comeback had started to gain traction-until, the night before the 2012 Grammy Awards, the 48-year-old star was found dead, of unspecified causes, in her Beverly Hills hotel room.

Packed with photos and insight, People: Remembering Whitney Houston looks back on wonder, and drama, of a remarkable life.

People of the Big Voice: Photographs of Ho-Chunk Families by Charles Van Schaick, 1879-1942

People of the Big Voice: Photographs of Ho-Chunk Families by Charles Van Schaick, 1879-1942 Overview

People of the Big Voice tells the visual history of Ho-Chunk families at the turn of the twentieth century and beyond as depicted through the lens of Black River Falls, Wisconsin studio photographer, Charles Van Schaick. The family relationships between those who “sat for the photographer” are clearly visible in these images—sisters, friends, families, young couples—who appear and reappear to fill in a chronicle spanning from 1879 to 1942. Also included are candid shots of Ho-Chunk on the streets of Black River Falls, outside family dwellings, and at powwows. As author and Ho-Chunk tribal member Amy Lonetree writes, “A significant number of the images were taken just a few short years after the darkest, most devastating period for the Ho-Chunk. Invasion, diseases, warfare, forced assimilation, loss of land, and repeated forced removals from our beloved homelands left the Ho-Chunk people in a fight for their culture and their lives.”

The book includes three introductory essays (a biographical essay by Matthew Daniel Mason, a critical essay by Amy Lonetree, and a reflection by Tom Jones) and 300-plus duotone photographs and captions in gallery style. Unique to the project are the identifications in the captions, which were researched over many years with the help of tribal members and genealogists, and include both English and Ho-Chunk names. A significant contribution to the history of Native peoples, People of the Big Voice is a breathtaking portrayal of a resilient people whose story continues today.

In Beyond Portraiture, renowned photographer Bryan Peterson shows how to spot those “ah-ha!” moments and capture them forever. A teary child...old people laughing together...a smiling girl with big, big hair. Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu

Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780752226644
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu Overview

"They're Not Pets, Susan," says a stern father who has just shot a bumblebee, its wings sparkling in the evening sunlight. A lone office worker, less than an inch high, looks out over the river in his lunch break, "Dreaming of Packing it All In." A tiny man makes his way back to a tiny car, with a tiny shopping bag: "Shopping for one again." Another office worker sits atop a gigantic engagement ring and gazes into the distance; the caption reads, simply: "No." These are the collected photographs of Slinkachu, a London-based artist who for several years has been placing tiny hand painted people on street corners, park benches, and the Underground, and leaving them to fend for themselves. Much like Banksy’s early graffiti work, Slinkachu’s creations mix the bustle, humor, and melancholy of city life, and lie quietly in the darker corners of London’s streets, waiting to be discovered. And if you’re lucky enough to find one, to quote The Times: "Oddly enough, even when you know they are just hand-painted figurines, you can’t help but feel that their plights convey something of our own fears about being lost and vulnerable in a big, bad city." This volume also includes a forward from acclaimed novelist Will Self.

Customer Reviews

The review for this book is the same as my review for Walter Martin & Paloma Munoz: Travelers, found them together, love them both equally!

I saw this book at the SFMOMA bookstore, along with Little "People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu." I do feel a tad guilty about turning to amazon.com to purchase these books and not supporting the MOMA directly; I'm also curious if this effects the percentage the authors receive? That aside, I give top marks to amazon for offering these books as a pair, eerily intuitive folks! The books themselves are of excellent quality, the photos are beautiful. I shared these books with a number of people who all got a hearty laugh out of this style of miniature art. They arrived in good order as promised, thanks amazon!
