I am an amateur photographer and have been for two years. This book speaks to me as such without making me feel stupid or inferior for not having a career as a professional photographer. I give this book great praise for the information found within it. Although world-renown photographers are speaking to the reader about their personal field experiences and expertise, it is written in straight-forward language that amateurs may understand.

The book begins with an introduction of the five photographers and why they all prefer digital SLR systems over their former film systems. The next section includes the equipment used by each man to actually make the shots they get. They then provide concise dialogue of controlling exposure (chapter 1), understanding light (chapter 2), composing landscape images (chapter 3), landscape locations (chapter 4), and landscapes in black and white (chapter 5).

The book is not a series of drab or artistically subjective photographs that make you wonder, "Well, that picture looks nice/interesting...but how did they actually achieve this?" The photographs included in the book are essential in outlining their varied techniques and I love this book for their method in doing so.

Rather than just place pictures throughout the book with painfully vague captions stating, "See how the light plays a role on the landscape?" or, "Simplicity at its best," they actually have full captions accompanying every photograph detailing: 1. the location, 2. their critique of their work with additional tips and techniques, and 3. (THE MOST IMPORTANT) the camera equipment they used to take it and the shot information (i.e. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, 70-200mm lens, 1/15 sec at f/11, ISO 100)!! Every single picture has captions to that effect and it is extraordinarily helpful to see what literally makes a good landscape photograph.

The book does not supply you with endless technical details throughout the narration, so don't expect an all-encompassing book about photography. This book is specific to real landscapes found in the real world with minimal post-processing and nothing more. No slight-of-hand, no smoke and mirrors, just real testimonials of professionals who use digital SLRs as though they were film systems - but with digital perks.

An example of this is when David Noton explains in a caption that he spent four days staking out the best conditions for just one photograph. They didn't take a few snapshots and splice them together in post-processing to make a digital fake. This book showcases genuine professional photography!

Similarly mentioned by another reviewer, the layout of the book does not make me feel as though I stumbled upon a "world-renown" photographer's highbrow portfolio and soiled it with my inexperienced, amateurish eyes. The book is straight-forward and written by guys who know their stuff and, more importantly, have the humility to translate their work for amateurs to understand.

The pictures are aesthetically pleasing and envious. The captions and narrations are readable at every competency level. I would recommend this to anyone serious in elevating their landscape photography.

The London-Stone book A Short Course in Digital Photography is an excellent example of a seriously refined book for the beginning photographer. In an age when so many photography books attempt to avoid obvious and critical links to analog photography precedents, the authors safely navigate the student from the crucial examples of the past into contemporary practice. The references to traditional photography, or whatever one may wish to call film, are valuable for students of any age and any background. Also, by introducing Lightroom and Aperture, but not trying the impossible task to cover them completely, the authors encourage further research into more advanced program guides. Indeed, this is an excellent all-around short course book.

I own and have read and re-read many of John Margolies' previous books on roadside art and architecture such as "Ticket to Paradise" (movie theaters); "Home Away from Home" (motels); "Pump and Circumstance" (gas stations). These books mix period images, advertising and ephemera with John's razor-sharp, color-saturated Kodachromes. The text on all of these is well researched but not clogged with academic jargon. Clearly, Margolies has a vast knowledge as well as appreciation of the graphic qualities of these once largely ignored (even reviled) manifestations of the spirit of American entrepreneurism.

So, of course, when Taschen announced "Roadside America" - a profile of Margolies and a collection of his stand-alone photographs - I pre-ordered with anticipation and some curiosity to see how they would look, raw against the page unframed by text. They are, I think, the purest evocation of this lost exuberance. Many interpretations of roadside phantasmagoria are sentimental nostalgia. Others have that whiff of satire that sometimes emanates from "art" photography. Margolies' images are iconic, never ironic.

There are photographers whose work is interesting only when accompanied by extensive explanation. There are photographers whose work is intriguing without print accompaniment. There are only a few, like Margolies, which work either way. Although he seems to have made a career of avoiding the attachment of "artist" to his name -- this book will make that hard to do. The physical book is an incredible package -- beautifully printed, beautifully designed. And it's an incredible bargain.

This handsome volume takes us on a trip through the country. His other books have tantalizing insight into old downtowns and commercial districts. Next up, I hope - John Margolies' Main Street. This one we will definitely pre-order too!

Patrick Demarchelier is widely regarding as one of, if not the, world's leading fashion photographer of our times. Despite his early years in and around Paris, it was Demarchelier's move to New York that landed him squarely in the sites of publications like Glamour, Elle, Mademoiselle, as well as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar where he enjoyed decade long collaborative relationships.

Like his predecessors, Henri Cartier-Bresson (for whom Demarchelier once worked) and Richard Avedon, Demarchelier has brought the rich and famous to his striking world of black and white portraiture. While not his first book, this Steidl edition is certainly the most complete compendium of his impressive body of work.

During his career, Demarchelier has captured iconic images of both top celebrities and models (the true supermodels) and this 408 page volume shows the best of that work with models (Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss) and non-models (Princess Diana, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Warren Beatty and numerous others) from both his magazine shoots as well as those for a host of corporate ad clients as well. (LouisVuitton, Chanel, L'Oreal, Lancome, Calvin Klein, Versace, Armani, Prada and Gucci have all used him over the years.) Despite it's cover (and unlike other photographers who often rely on intricate poses and props to create their images - Newton, LaChapelle, Leibowitz, Seliger, etc.) Demarchelier's portraits are often disarmingly simple and direct, allowing the essence of the individual to come to the fore. The book itself is laid out in a dramatic and uncomplicated format - a single large (mostly) black and white image on most pages - complimenting the feeling of the photographer's work.

What is surprising, is that given Demarchelier's stature as well as the extent of his work, that there hasn't been a comprehensive, retrospective work like this until now (most of the photographs depicted here are from the 80's and 90's - well over a decade ago.) Regardless, `Patrick Demarchelier' serves as a well done, albeit overdue, collection of one of the top portrait photographers of our time, which means, it is about time, indeed.
